The Daruma is about pursing a goal. It's a Japanese paper figurine based off a traditional story. When you purchase the figurine, it has empty spaces where the eyes should be. When you set off to pursue a goal in your life, you color in one of the eyes to acknowledge the beginning of your journey. When you achieve the goal you color in the other eye, thus recognizing the end of your journey. But not all journeys reach their destination, so after a period of time, if you have not achieved your goal, it is tradition to burn the Daruma figurine to free yourself to pursue another goal. It is also tradition to burn the Daruma figurine even if you do achieve your goal. There is always something new in life to pursue, and both our successes and failures can carry weight.
